I’ve Been Making Spaceships

Since I have nothing but time on my hands for the next couple weeks, I’ve been working on assets. This week that means ships for an as yet unnamed space shooter. If the shooter doesn’t use the Rokkit engine, it’ll probably be a rail shooter like Space Harrier. The advantages to a rail shooter are twofold: the simplicity of the interface lets the player focus on the action rather than the controls (it’ll be set up for both keyboard and gamepad), and it’ll be a whole new underlying engine so it won’t just be “Rokkit with guns.”

These names are all just basic descriptions rather than what they’ll necessarily be called in-game. Or maybe they won’t be named in any way the player can access, in which case these simple descriptors are just fine. As usual, these models are LOD A prototypes. I’ll upgrade the ones that show real promise later on.

First up is the Ball Ship. It started out as just a ball, but then I decided to add some wings. I screwed around with different wing shapes and sizes until I wound up with what you see here. In my head, this will be a small, maneuverable, relatively flimsy fighter pod.

Then I made the Clam Ship. Compared to the Ball Ship, this will be slower and much less maneuverable, but much more heavily armored. The two shell pieces may end up being bulletproof to force the player to focus on the central pod.

Last but not least is the Mushroom Ship. I haven’t decided how this one will move yet, except I plan to have the upper part rotate slowly like an old B-movie flying saucer.

After these, I have some ideas for more classic flying saucer type ships. At the very least I’m planning to have a big, dangerous one and a tiny, very fast and maneuverable saucer that travels in swarms.
