I Made A Discovery

Got bored working on some FPS engine tweaks to see how it worked indoors and figured I’d just make a little dungeon “inspired by” The Legend of Zelda.  The original NES game, not one of the newer ones.  Not hard, considering you can find full screencap maps online.  Looking at these maps and from playing it, it seemed like putting it on a 1-meter grid would be about right and I threw together a couple of rooms with the right proportions.

Yeah, about that…

You want claustrophobia?  That’s how you get claustrophobia.  Combine the cramped rooms with the default engagement range on the hammer-wielding standups and you have every enemy in the joint rushing you at once.

While this can be fun under certain circumstances, it isn’t a good default.  Even if it means your rooms and hallways are ridiculously wide, you do not want to be running around in 7x12m rooms and 1-2m wide passages (implied by the door widths and placements). Especially if you’re fixin’ to have a firefight in these areas.
