So a while back I was involved in a conversation about diabetic-friendly food. The topic wound up shifting to low-fat and fat-free foods, and I made the comment that if you’re watching carbs (as a diabetic gorram should) a lot of these foods are terrible for you. Specifically salad dressings because they replace a lot (or all) of the oil with weird fillers that are loaded with carbohydrate. If you don’t believe me, go to the store and compare the nutritional information for a regular dressing and its low-fat or fat-free counterpart. It’s a big enough issue that the classes they had me take when I was diagnosed specifically mentioned it as a trap.
Anyway, we’re talking about salad dressings, I mention this, and the smug imbecile shows up to enlighten us. He starts smugly demanding to know why I thought olive oil was a weird filler. When I pointed out I wasn’t talking about olive oil in any way, he started jabbering about how low-fat and fat-free dressings use olive oil instead of whatever other oil. My response, naturally, was to ask what the point would be in replacing one oil with another when you’re trying to remove fat from a recipe.
I kid you not, this genius doubled down on the stupid and smugly proclaimed that “olive oil is a fat-free oil.”
One tablespoon of olive oil contains 14 grams of fat. Same with corn, soybean, coconut, and generic vegetable oil. Not only is it not “a fat-free oil,” it isn’t even lower in fat than other common oils.
Pointing this out resulted in the smug imbecile smugly saying “nuh-uh. Olive oil is fat-free,” calling people who dared point out that all edible oils are made of fat stupid or ignorant (complete with repeated demands we either “look it up” or “educate yourself before you say stupid stuff like that”), or both. All the while maintaining a level of smug that if it could be harnessed would solve our energy crisis and probably let us jump-start Jupiter to give us a second star like in 2010.
Needless to say, I Blocked the dimbulb. Because who has time for that level of stupidity that isn’t even entertaining.
