Done writing for October with six days to spare!
Now I get to start writing for November. ~9,000 words. Then December. Anuvver ~10,000 words. At least I have the two holiday posts already written and scheduled for Feasting Day and the Winter Solstice. I should probably throw together the New Year’s post while I’m at it just to get it out of the way.
And to do December I’ll need a metric buttload of 3D models, GameObjects, and at least one full scene. Maybe more depending on whether I decide to do buildings the lazy way (like Skyrim) or the hard way (like WoW).
Which is why I’m trying to work ahead on the writing. Not only do we have the Event next weekend, but we’re moving in a few weeks. And on top of that I need to build a whole town in Unity and Blender for December. Aside from a few assets I already have made, that means gorram everything from the underlying terrain, to buildings and every single furnishing or piece of junk in them.
Want an idea of how much I have to do? Go play Fallout 3 or later, Skyrim, or anything similar. Go into the starting town and look around. Walk into a house and look at the architecture and all the stuff lying around on the counters. I get to build all of that largely from scratch in Blender, export it to Unity, and make it work in the FPS interface.
On the upside, the vast majority of it will work just fine in pretty much every other game model I’m working on. A table is a table. A door is a door. Doesn’t matter if it’s an FPS or a 2.5D fixed-follow camera game, it’s all 3D models. So there’s that.
Thank Elvis I’m only doing most of it at LOD-A for prototyping purposes. Trying to do it at LOD-C or D would take months or maybe a year.
Just did the math, and I’m cranking about a novel and a half (by NaNoWriMo standards if they didn’t cheat — don’t get me started on their crooked-ass word count bookkeeping) worth of writing every year just on the Devil Monkey blog. Plus all the coding and 3D modeling.
“Start your own game studio,” I said. “It’ll be fun,” I said. “You can screw around with vidgames and RPG stuff all day while watching cartoons and belly dancers,” I said. Dear Elvis I’m an idiot.
