Create29 2024: Week I, 1-3 February

It’s only a three-day week, but I can lay the foundation of my Halcyon bar project.

1 February: Box O’ Shivs and Modular Shivs

What does a bar on Halcyon need to set it apart from other bars on other planets?  Other than the monkey pit?  The implements the monkeys will use to do terrible Things to each other.  I bring you the Box O’ Shivs and the knives contained within.

I went with a simple wooden crate with a hinged top.  It serves one purpose, to hold the knives dropped by dead monkeys after a fight for redistribution to other monkeys before their “big debut” in the monkey pit.  So it’s basically a glorified garbage bin.

The knives are part of the Modular Shiv Project.  I based the idea on how Neverwinter Nights did weapon models.  It was simple, but relatively effective: come up with a number of grips and a number of blades as separate models, and allow them to be combined at will to allow a bunch of weapons to be made according to the “handle + blade = pain” formula.  It’s an exponential return – for 4 blades and 4 handles I end up with 16 knives.  And I can continue to add knives, handles, etc. as time permits.  The formula can be applied to almost any weapon – Fallout 4 did it with heavily-customizable guns.

The models are based loosely on a Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife, tanto-style knife, medieval dagger, and a Bowie knife.  The Bowie knife stretches the limits of usability by a Hamadryas baboon, as it’s 13” long.  That’s almost a monkey-scale broadsword.

2 February: Tables

People need something to put their grilled diamondtail with a side of cassava fries on.  Since I’m basing this bar on an Irish pub, this calls for a proper dining room table.  I also based this please on a pizza parlor and people sometimes eat alone or with one other person, so I threw in a standard round diner table.

I made a standard dining room (or 4-top) table and a diner table.  The diner table is a 2-piese plastic extrusion, and the dining room table is wood.  I did this one early on (originally it was scheduled for mid-month), because I realized I’d need a table to put the glassware and table settings on for display purposes.

3 February: Simple Wooden Chair

Once they have a nice juicy terrorsaur steak served up on a table, it helps if they have someplace to sit.  There also aren’t a lot of office jobs in rural Halcyon, so most people spend all day on their feet.  Chairs are definitely a necessity.

This is a simple wooden chair with a padded seat.  Nothing much more to say about it.  It’s a wooden chair with a padded seat.  The structure is wood, and the seat is rough homespun.  Sturdy, but cheap enough that if some hillbilly decides to break it over the head of a biker it’s easy to replace.
