Create 28 Week 1, 1-7 February

First week is down.  Here’s what I made.

1 February: Modular Metal Ladder, LOD A

Modular Ladder

It’s a metal ladder, 1 meter wide and 1 meter tall.  Multiple pieces can be stacked in the engine to make a taller ladder.  I went bare-bones galvanized metal to represent a really basic industrial ladder made from pipes and rectangular conduit like you would see in a factory or machine shop; I’ve climbed dozens of ladders exactly like this in my life.

2 February: Metal Grate Walkway, LOD A

This is a basic metal grate walkway with a grating welded to the top of a metal conduit support.  If you’ve ever been in a factory or machine shop, you’ve walked on something very similar.  As with the ladder above, in the real world these would be pretty easy to put together from metal stock using an arc welder.

I made this in 1 meter square sections.  The illustration is of three of them stuck end to end to make a bridge, rendered using the Unity engine rather than Blender.  I’ll also be making railings and metal grate steps to go with it.

3 February: Metal Grate Steps, LOD A

The stairs that go with the walkway above.  It was built using the same design principles as the walkway above.  Any competent maintenance guy could build these or the walkway section pretty quickly using basic shop equipment and stock.  I certainly could, and I’m much more of an electrical and code guy than a welder or mechanic – thank you Hennepin Technical College and the ARET program for giving us a broad field of study.  There’s something weird going on with the texture on the uprights, so I’ll have to fix that in the next iteration, but other than that they’re looking decent for a placeholder.

4 February: Railings, LOD A

More basic kit-bashed industrial equipment.  In this case, metal pipes and fittings.  As with the walkways and stairs, this is something someone could build quickly and easily even in their garage.  The pipe fittings only require a couple pair of channel locks to attach to each other, and the hardest part is aligning the leg and rail lengths.  Then it’s a simple welding or bolt job to attach them to the walkway.

5 February: Walkway and Stair Terrain Piece

The walkway sections, stairs, and railings all put together to make a little terrain piece.  They have the necessary colliders to allow them to be walked on and stop projectiles, and since I made this in my FPS sandbox I’ve already run the player across it.

6 February: 60mm RPG, LOD A

A basic 60mm RPG model. Once I add the supporting code, a player will be able to launch it in-game. And since I already have seeker head code written, that’s hardly insurmountable. While the fins are kind of thick and clunky when zoomed in this far, bear in mind the whole missile is six inches long and will be traveling downrange at a over a hundred meters per second. Unless I leave one lying around in the world, nobody’s going to get the chance to look at it too closely.

7 February: Ceramic Plate, Round, LOD A

People have to eat, don’t they? And civilized people use dishes, utensils, and all that good stuff. I already have square and octagonal plates, but never got around to doing a basic round one. So I made a basic round plate.

Eventually this will be part of a place setting for a studio scene I’m working on.
