This just looks like too much fun to pass up. It’s the Character Creation Challenge, wherein you create a character for a game you either play or want to play.
Being me, I’m going to (in theory) be designing characters for seven (or six. Or eight) different games. Naturally, these four will be at the top of the list: GURPS, Planet Mercenary, Car Wars, and BattleTech. If you want to be pedantic I’ll actually be using GURPS Autoduel and MechWarrior rather than Car Wars and BattleTech because the “characters” in each are just a couple/few numbers, and that’s gorram cheating.
In addition, I’ll be doing a character or characters for these three (or four if I add BRP) games: the 40K RPG (which they want to claim is something like five games but is really just one ruleset with campaign-specific tweaks), Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition (and maybe Basic RolePlaying since it’s pretty much the same ruleset), and Star Trek Adventures.
I’m doing it here rather than Devil Monkey for three reasons:
- it isn’t Monkey Business
- I want to avoid any possible IP issues that could come up if I don’t have the disclaimer worded properly.
- I was serious when I said I was going to strip the Devil Monkey blog back to a basic dev blog. The whole thing is being redesigned for a complete nuke and pave once I get the chance.
GURPS
I have no idea who I’ll be designing for GURPS right now aside from a generic medieval fantasy necromancer and agent of chaos. I have a few ideas, but they’re all pretty nebulous and iffy. Most likely I’ll do characters from a variety of worlds just because the system can do so much.
Planet Mercenary
This one is easy since the game is pretty much designed to do exactly one thing and do it well. I’ll be designing a small mercenary company, including a Captain, Ops Commander, Chaplain, and Engineer. Probably throw in their ship too just for fun.
Autoduel
Not sure who to work on here. Probably take a few archetypes and play with them. A truck crew, cop, duelist, and town militia are all kind of speaking to me, as is a dreg. That should give a nice variety.
BattleTech
Thinking about a mercenary lance. So four mercenary MechWarriors built with MechWarrior 2nd Edition.
40K RPG
I’ll be putting together a small Acolyte cell. In my head right now I have a Tech-Priest, Arbiter, Adept, and Scum. That should give a nice cross-section of skills, with two muscle characters and a third who can back them up as fire support.
Call of Cthulhu
Going with the ‘20s. Beyond that I have almost no idea beyond not designing some kind of strike team full of gunfighters. That said, one of them will be a WWI vet with PTSD just because it fits so well with the time frame and themes.
Star Trek Adventures
The lifepath system can give some fun results, so I kind of want to see just where it takes me.
